Survivor of the Flames by johwee Survivor of the Flames by johwee
I think this may be one of my favorite carvings ever, and I'm betting it won't be nearly as popular as my others. Such is the way of pumpkin carving.

So this is Spook, the Survivor of the Flames, from Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy. These books are awesome, and you should read them if you haven't already. I'm serious. Go read them.

So this pumpkin is based off one of my favorite images from the third book. Spook, also known as Lestibournes, with his blindfold and burnt cape, surrounded by flames. The pattern also incorporates the the symbol for Tin in the background, and Pewter on his chest. Read the books, it will make sense.

As for the pattern, since I can't draw for beans the credit for this goes to by good buddy Ashleigh! She did a fantastic job of pattern making. Major credit and thanks to her :D

I had a lot of fun carving it as well, even if it took awhile. About 6 hours, I think. I used a lot of the marker technique, but I think it turned out well. I tried to give it a gradient so the ends were more burnt, but it didn't photograph very well. Such is the way of pumpkin carving.

This is a super cool piece! It actually kind of reminds me of a pumpkin carving. I loved Spook's story in the final book, and the pewter carving is just... yes....

Thank you! Those are probably my favorite parts of the carve too. Or maybe the cape, I really like the cape.

Don't know the books, but I kinda want to read 'em now, especially if they can inspire such an awesome pumpkin carving :D

Fantastic carving job. The marking on his chest stands out so well.

I thought this was a painting at first, thinking it was kinda blocky ... then I read the description xD
Awesome job there, seriously.
I really like how Spook developed over the course of the trilogy, too. It just bugs me that we never actually get to see/read of him being mistborn ...

Thank you! Have you read Alloy of Law yet? There are lots of little references to Spook that tell a little bit of what happened :D

No, I haven't, unfortunately. I'm pretty short on cash at the moment, but as soon as that changes the first thing I'll do is order it. I did read the preview chapters, though, and I damn well liked what I saw there.
Thinking of it, I need to read BS's other books, too ... still some time to kill till A Memory Of Light will be released ...

I really recommend his other books as well, especially Way of Kings. It's looking like it's going to be the most epic of epic fantasies!

I'm actually rereading the Wheel of Time so I can be ready in time for the last one. I stopped reading after Crossroads of Twilight came out because I wanted to wait until it finished.

Yeah, seeing as to how much time there is yet between Towers of Midnight and A Memory of Light, I'll probably have to refresh my memory as well ... did read them all until now, but I definitely need a reread ...

Way of Kings seems to be among the most popular - with Mistborn of course - of his books ... At least, people seem to rate those better than, say, Warbreaker. I'm still gonna read all of them, though ... ^^

It's amazing how much I'd forgotten over the years. Even some major characters like Padin Fain and stuff like that. I think I would be totally lost if I just jumped in where I had left off.

I think Way of Kings is recommended a lot because it's got so much potential. Warbreaker and Elantris are good as well, but they work as standalones so there's not as much anticipation for the next ones. If that makes sense.
