Pumpkin Carving Tutorial - Part 3 by johwee Pumpkin Carving Tutorial - Part 3 by johwee
Huge file warning! You have been warned!

Accompanying Video: [link]

This is part 3 of 3 of the Pumpkin Carving Tutorial that I have spent the past week working my butt off on. I've been trying to make a proper tutorial with pictures for years now, and I've finally come up with something I'm proud of.

Many thanks go to my friend ~TamIsMyFather for proofreading these for me, making me use hyphens, and helping me make sense!

I'll do my best to answer any questions that may come up, so ask away! I'd also love to see any pumpkin carvings that you guys make, so feel free to send those my way!

Another year using your sweet advice on a pumpkin. I still need to build a decent set of tools for this (when I can spare the cash). Anyway, had to come back and remember what to do to preserve the pumpkin. Let's see if the fridge can handle this...

I'm glad I could help again! I've been wanting to upgrade some of my tools myself, but I am also lacking the spare cash for it this year.

Aaaah my poor fridge is totally devoid of food thanks to the stupid pumpkins. Like I have some soda at the bottom, some milk and a bunch of sauce stuff stuck in the door, and then pumpkins all the way xD

Well I was going to use this guide... But, I kid you not, every single store is sold out of pumpkins.... Which also means no delicious pumpkin seeds for me... T_T

Oh no that's terrible! I really hate when pumpkins disappear early :( It's like the worst possible thing!

Yeah I know! What really sucked was the fact that I'd just found an awesome pumpkin seed recipe that my friend showed me. Cinnamon and Cajun pumpkin seeds! I HATE cinnamon but these... it may very easily have been the greatest pumpkin seeds I've ever had... Hopefully stores will keep them stocked for Thanksgiving (for homemade pumpkin pies and such) and I'll be able to make the seeds myself...

Dude that sounds delicious! Do you still have the recipe? I'd like to try it myself!

Basically you just cook them like regular pumpkin seeds, but instead of just salting them, you shake on some Cajun seasoning with a dash of cinnamon! So easy! And the stores are still not selling pumpkins... I'm scared that they aren't restocking them anymore. *sigh* But I'll find a way!

I'll have to try that on some of the pumpkins I saved from this weekend! And I hope that you'll find pumpkins somehow! Are there any farmers markets around where you live?

Nope. Not for a good few hours drive. Oh well. If I don't find any, I can keep my hopes up for next year.

One of these days I should really buy some transfer paper.... lol!

But that is a great tutorial! You really explained everything clearly. :) And yeah... I can see how the dremel drill works now... I have to say it sure does look a lot easier than doing it by hand! lol!

And I am SO glad you brought attention to finishing! So many people forget that step! I've seen so many pumpkins in the past with the flesh poking out from behind the pattern...

Anywho, great job! You chose a great pattern for illustrating all of the concepts. :)

Oh man, once I found the transfer paper I could never go back to the old poking method. There was one year where I ran out right after Halloween but I still had a pumpkin to carve and it was tragic!

And thank you! I'm glad it was clear, I'm never too sure if I make sense to people or not when I start talking about pumpkins ^-^

I've seen it a lot of not quite finished pumpkins too and it makes me sad! Some of them I think would be true masterpieces if they'd only take a little more time to pay attention to the small things.

I was JUST thinking about you and your pumpkins today! My boyfriend took me to a pumpkin patch (aka, a mall parking lot with pumpkins, lol) and I was wondering about the best method to carve these suckers. Here I have my new pumpkin waiting to be carved, and I was about to look at your old journals when lo and behold I find these awesome tutorials in my inbox! I'm freakin' excited!

Though, I am wondering where can I get that transfer paper stuff. I hate using that Pumpkin Masters wheel with spikes thing or tracing the picture with a sharp object and applying flour to see the lines. Not the best method. =/

Haha, I totally know the mall parking lot pumpkin patches xD They used to be where I got all my pumpkins before I moved up to Northern California where there are real patches!

And I'm glad that these ended up posted in time for your carving! I was really worried I'd be late since they were taking so long to write.

I don't know if more national chain art stores like Micheals or Joannes sells the transfer paper, but I've seen it at smaller independent art stores before. It's probably easiest to find it online by googling for it.
