Kvothe Sixstring by johwee Kvothe Sixstring by johwee
EDIT: I've never done this before but I was really disappointed with how this picture had turned out so I tried again and got some much better shots. So I've updated this with the newer version. Hope this doesn't inconvenience anyone who favourited the first one!

This weekend's pumpkin is another teamup with friend and patternmaker ~TamIsMyFather for a pumpkin based on the Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss. It's Kvothe playing The Lay of Sir Savien Traliard to earn his talent pipes at the Eolian with a broken lute string.

After the Wheel of Time pumpkin last year, TamIsMyFather asked what we were going to do next. I told her Name of the Wind, and she went to town and made this super awesome pattern. If I had known how long it was going to take to carve all those music notes I would have probably asked for fewer of them, but I'll be damned if they don't look awesome. The entire carving took somewhere around 9 hours total, I was up all night again carving. I really need to stop doing that.

I'm super happy with how the pumpkin itself turned out, but I am increasingly frustrated with my camera this year. The photos are turning out significantly more grainy this year and I don't know why. Not much I can do about it now though, but I think it still looks ok.

What kind of camera do you use, because it may be your ISO that is causing the graininess.  Anyway enough camera talk, your work is amazing and to carve that on a pumpkin is spectacular, and really hard to do.  Great job :D and thank you for doing the Kingkiller Chronicles.

I use an Olympus StylusTough-3000. I did eventually narrow it down to the ISO, you're right. But the camera's just bad in general at balancing the low ISO for less graininess with the brightness needed to see all the details in the shading. I think I just need to upgrade sometime before next year honestly.

And thank you very much! I'm a huge fan of the Kingkiller Chronicles so I knew I had to carve it one of these days :D
