Double Pichu Watermelon Light by johwee Double Pichu Watermelon Light by johwee
Photography really sucks for carvings when I end up bisecting the watermelon. It basically involves setting the candles on the ground, putting the carving over them, and then pointing the camera downward at it. Kind of a pain in the ass to set up.

You can really see how I played with the ground spot on the watermelon here.

Yep! It's slightly different than pumpkin carving, but the basics are all there.

Not really, just different. Like with shading, you have to use a slightly different technique because it's thinner than a pumpkin. I'd say the hardest part is trying to get edible sized pieces of watermelon out from the inside.

Close! I actually don't know where these two showed up other then one of the Japanese anime endings, but I know they were part of a HG/SS promo thing. And one of them is a girl, I forget which one though!

No, they were at one of those short clips before the movies (Can't remember which) where Ash's Pikachu meets the two Pichus at a city (Nothing fancy but a nice short nonetheless).

Oh yeah, those were the pichu bros. I carved them on a watermelon as one of my first attempts. This carving is of the newer pichu duo though :D

How the hell do you gut these things? that must be messy!

I usually do it over the kitchen sink, since you're right, it is really messy. If it's not a good tasting watermelon and I'm feeling lazy, I'll usually just go in with a small pumpkin scoop and just scrape everything out and make a big mess. But if the watermelon's good I'll go and use a melon baller to save the watermelon to eat while carving.

In this particular case though, since it's actually half a watermelon it was pretty easy to get it out in slices with a regular knife without much mess.

Oh, wow, okay that makes sense. I've always been curious as to how you did this.

did you cut out those two or scrape the top off?

A little bit of both actually. For parts like the tips of the ears and the tails, I scraped layers off the top. But the pichus themselves are cut out like a jack-o-lantern.

thanks and what did youuse to scrape it off and what would suggest as a method and tool for a pumpkin (I really hope I can make a carving you can see because I grew a BIG pumpkin{WHat I mean is I hope it lasts})

Well for this one I tried something new and used just an exacto knife, and it kind of turned out badly compared to my usual method.

For pumpkins my favorite tool is a dremel pumpkin carving drill, specifically this one: [link] It works like a charm and it's great for super big projects, although it takes a lot of batteries sometimes. My method is basically to outline the shading with shallow cuts from the exacto knife, and then go in and shade everything out with the drill, then use the knife again to clean up around the edges. It's kind of hard to describe without pictures, so I'm planning on making a tutorial type thing as soon as the first pumpkins start showing up.

Whoops, sorry for the late reply. The dremel is for scraping, I use a saw type knife for actually carving out pieces.

Thanks for replying it's really helpful (might have to use a dremel this year because I grew this really thick skinned pumpkin and don't know if I can cut it easily)

My advice for thick skinned pumpkins is to thin them out from the inside as much as you can, while keeping the surface shading relatively shallow. I actually have a marvelous tool called a pumpkin gutter for just those occasions, it's called a Pumpkin Gutter. It's a power drill attachment that lets you gut and thin pumpkins really fast, and it's fun as all get out to use :D
